Vintage Modern Ranch Living Room Reveal

This midcentury brick ranch had a cramped, awkward living room layout. So I made some enhancements that opened up the space.

The showpiece? This inkblot wallpaper from Spoonflower. Using this on the fireplace wall anchored a room with multiple entry points.

This pattern strikes just the right balance between soft and edgy. The delicate blue color looks so good with the burnt orange tones from the original hardwood floors. Color matching the rest of the walls to the cream color in the wallpaper makes the whole room feel unified and cohesive.

These vintage brass etageres allow the wallpaper to show through while creating a place to display cherished items and plants. I used a handful of transparent accessories so the line of vision wasn’t obstructed to the back wall.

Threading hits of black throughout the room creates contrast and makes the entire room have a more modern feel.

I am all about versatility in small spaces and that means using items that can pull double duty! This X-bench, in leopard, from The Inside does just that! It can be used as extra seating, a side table, entry bench...and so on.

It also makes a chic bench for this piano opposite the wallpapered wall which is where it stays when we aren’t entertaining.

I initially considered painting this piano but I’m so glad I didn’t. The wood is so gorgeous and with a few thoughtful accessories, it now feels like it belongs in a modern home.

Rather than focusing on multiple couches, I created a small sitting area opposite the sofa with occasional chairs that keep the gorgeous floor exposed. Using a modular coffee table allows for versatility when entertaining in this small space.

My original plan was to put a large rug in here but after seeing the beautiful floors with this wallpaper, I knew I couldn’t cover them up! A cowhide rug elevates the sitting area while letting most of the flooring in the room to remain visible.

The next big change I made in this room was to update the double paned windows. Once the drapes were removed, it really opened things up. I decided to paint the muntins black to give them the industrial feel of factory steel windows. I also created a faux lead glass effect on the panes to create privacy and make these feel even more aged. More on how I did this to come!
