Fall 2021 ONE ROOM CHALLENGE - HAUSMATTER INTERIORS KITCHEN/DINING WEEK 2
It’s week 2 of the One Room Challenge!
In cased you missed it, here’s Week 1
You haven’t worked a day in your life until you’ve removed a popcorn ceiling.
Just kidding. LOL. But I’m also kind of not kidding?
I think this image helps shed a little bit of light on how messy this job is. But I also want to point out that although I did cover everything with plastic, popcorn somehow landed inside everything. In the salt. In the pots and pans. In the jars. In body parts you didn’t know existed.
In case you missed my tutorial:
Now on to some pretty things. I received the sconces from Ranor Lighting and they are sooooo cool. I originally ordered them in brass, but then quickly messaged Ori, the owner, to switch to white. I’m so glad I did. Since I’ve painted over my white walls with this dark red, I’m now getting to enjoy white in this whole new way. Seeing these moments of subtracted color is feeling so fresh. I love brass but I’m excited to take a break from it for this project.
Repeat after me, I will hire a professional to paint a dark color on my wall. I don’t know if it was the quality of paint I selected, or what, but painting this room required 5 coats. FIVE COATS. I always do labor I can, myself, because I much prefer to have my money go to fun things in the room. But, I determined any dark rooms in our next house will be done with a sprayer, by a professional.
I didn’t want to share this photo because I equally did not want to clean up before taking it. But here it is.
This is the last time I will share a wide view of this room before reveal day so take it in…Notice, if you will, the smooth, bright white ceilings…
I love the white contrast of the ceiling and drapes next to this rich color. I’m so excited to install the mural this weekend!
Still working on selling this dining set on the marketplace. In the meantime, I’m contemplating an oval or round tulip replacement. But the chairs have been ordered!
Now back to the kitchen. I have some exciting news to share: My landlord was totally up for new countertops, so I’ve been in a design-frenzy trying to pick my favorite laminate for this project! I considered a white marble, but that felt too trendy, and maybe a little too expected. I also considered a black countertop, which is so COUNTERintuitive (see what I did there?) to the dark walls, but Andy reminded me that we are renting my dream-dark-cave-kitchen of wonder and that our landlord might not appreciate my teenage goth side. So I chose something in the middle. It will look unique and so much better than what’s currently installed.
Also, I’m so thrilled to partner with Signature Hardware who will be supplying this kitchen faucet and sink!
My E-design process usually involves refining the initial mood-board a bit after some feedback with my client. There are so many reasons for this. Since design is a bit like a puzzle, or dominos rather, one small change can effect a few others. Sometimes things also become unavailable. If you remain a little flexible, you will enjoy the process so much more. Although I am the designer, this project in my own home really isn’t different. There have been tweaks and adjustments along the way. So here is a revision of the mood-board from last week.
