Design Coloring Books

Since we have been stuck at home during this quarantine, I’ve been looking for new things to do with my daughter that are more craft-oriented. Specifically, mindless activities - like coloring. Kids are so good at prioritizing this kind of play, and I think adults need it too. It’s why I love to vacuum (has anyone every said that before in the history of the world? LOL)

Now don’t get my wrong, I can enjoy coloring Mickey and his clubhouse with the best of ‘em, but I wanted to see what else was out there. I’ve done the adult coloring thing before and wasn’t interested in mandalas or other large, repetitive patterns. So imagine my delight when I came across this coloring book from Young House Love!

The illustrations are SO GOOD! Now I’m able to color alongside my daughter and we can both enjoy the activity in our own way.

I love the detail.

I feel like I’m seeing my dollhouse design fantasies come to life! LOL

And this book is also proving my theory that large rooms with architectural interest, have WAY more room to play with bold color and pattern. This is not my house, so that’s part of the fun of it!

If you have been following me on instagram, you know I can’t paint abstract art to save my life. This type of color-in-the-lines art is right up my type-A alley. With all of the furnishings and decor in place, I’m able to solely focus on color.

Watercolor has been a curiosity of mine lately, because it feels more forgiving to me as a medium. I picked up this colored pencil set because it has a very cool feature; they are able to be used wet or dry, so they can function a lot like watercolors, but with the ability to give fine detail like a pencil.

Which is exactly how I was able to create this “marble” counter on this hutch! By first using my white and charcoal pencils, and then a wet brush to softly blend them.
